There seems to be increasing disquiet in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia over an alleged discreet move by Members of the parliament to impeach President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
It was gathered that a copy of the motion, seen by Reuters, contains lists of allegations labeled against him as grounds to justify the impeachment of Farmaajo.
Amongst the alleged infractions accusation on Farmaajo include secretly, signing a pact with other countries such as Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The agreements premised on the use of Somali ports by the aforementioned countries and other economic and security tides.
He is also accused of alleged illegal extradition of criminals to other countries thereby; abusing Somalia’s sovereignty and federalism laws as well as the rules and regulations of the parliament.
A top official of Somali’s parliament, Abdul-Karim H. Abdi Buh disclosed that a motion has been filed with the Speaker of the parliament to impeach the president based on his involvement in outright infringement of Somali laws.
Local media reported that as at Monday 10, December 2018, there were protests in the streets of the capital, Mogadishu, against the impeachment move. It can be recalled that Farmaajo has been in office since early 2017 and his tenure is expected to last till 2021.
Additionally, the motion was rejected by the Deputy Speaker of the Country’s parliament as it fails to securethe endorsement of two-thirds (2/3) members of the parliament. However, sponsors of the move argued that constitutionally, 92 out of the 275 lawmakers can sign such a motion for it to be submitted to the speaker of which according to them, the move as met that provision.
In contrast to the above, Parliamentary Members who opposed the move asserted that a successful impeachment requires the endorsement of two thirds (2/3) of all the Members of the Parliaments (MPs).
Meanwhile, the development is retarding the country's drive to end the decade-long insurrection by the Al-Shabab militants as well as the international effort to get the country out of economic woods.
Recently, the United States of America (USA) opened it Embassy in Mogadishu after being closed for nearly two decades.
