The United States Military on Friday conducted airstrikes targeting ISIS fighters in Libya. The Military strike is the first of its kind since Donald Trump became the United States President. The US Africa Command made the disclosure in a statement released to CNN.
"In coordination with Libya's Government of National Accord and aligned forces, U.S. forces conducted six precision airstrikes in Libya against an ISIS desert camp on Friday. ISIS and al-Qaeda have taken advantage of ungoverned spaces in Libya to establish sanctuaries for plotting, inspiring and directing terror attacks,"
The statement noted that 17 ISIS fighters were killed during the strike while vehicles at the camp located about 150 miles southeast of Sirte were destroyed.
The camp according to the statement "was used by ISIS to move fighters in and out of the country; stockpile weapons and equipment; and to plot and conduct attacks," adding that "ISIS operatives in Libya have been connected to multiple attacks across Europe."
The strikes were carried out be unmanned aircraft after it was approved by President Trump. The African Command assured that it would sustain efforts toward degrading the group in the region.
"The United States will track and hunt these terrorists, degrade their capabilities and disrupt their planning and operations by all appropriate, lawful, and proportional means, including precision strikes."
