Flash Floods on Wednesday reportedly killed 11 people in the western outskirts of the Greek capital, Athens. According to Al Jazeera, the incident took place in Mandra, Nea Peramos and Magoula areas. The report said authorities in the town of Megara were searching for several missing residents.
It quoted the Vice Mayor of Megara, Stavros Fotiou as saying "We have had hundreds of calls for help. We are trying to access some areas and open the roads, but the rain still hasn't stopped"
He however could not confirm the number of damaged houses and vehicles affected by the floods.
Reacting to the incident, the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras tweeted that he was "deeply saddened by the loss of life caused by the catastrophic storm". He further disclosed that government teams have been dispatched to coordinate rescue efforts and provide relief materials to those affected by the floods.
Meanwhile, Greek media houses are reporting that the rains are expected to continue till tomorrow.
