Following the backlash that greeted the recent review of the secondary school curriculum, resulting in the collapse of Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) and Islamic Religious Knowledge to form National Values, the Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Educational Research Development Council (NERDC) to revert to status quo and immediately restore CRK and IRK as separate subjects.
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu gave the directive yesterday during a meeting with state commissioners of education and other stakeholders in the sector. The meeting according to the Minister was targeted at fashioning out modalities to ensure the realization of Goal 4 of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The goal seeks to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all"
The Minister said “there is this controversy over the merger of CRK and IRK in the school curriculum. There were complaints by parents that children were overloaded with so many subjects and the recommendation then was to merge one or two subjects.
“Unfortunately, water and oil were merged together and it is not working. So, to save ourselves the agony, the two subjects should be separated.”
