The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has threatened to sanction any politician who engages in the direct public political campaign prior to the approval of such exercise by the electoral umpire. The commission revealed that it was not against holding consultations and secret meetings as long as they are not a direct public gathering for open campaigns.
Accordingly, INEC national Commissioner, information and voter Education (IVEC), Festus Okoye, made this revelation in Kano yesterday during a capacity building workshop organized for Heads of Voter Education publicity (VEP) and public Affairs Officers of the Commission from the 19 northern states and the FCT.
Okoye said, “Political parties are free to do their congresses, conventions, and meetings. These are normal and consistent with the constitution and the electoral act. People are also free to aspire for political positions; it is their constitutional right.
He explained, “Our concern is that political parties are not supposed to engage in campaigns at this point in time, except for states having their local government elections for that purpose. Because, as of now, we are still operating within the existing electoral framework that makes it mandatory for political parties to only begin campaigns 90 days to the election.
He reiterated to the participants that the commission was not against the consultation but frowns on open campaigns.
Speaking on the faith of some states that were affected by insecurity, Okoye assured that INEC is consulting with security agencies to ensure no community is disenfranchised due to insecurity.
