The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says the rate of drug abuse particularly among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East is worrisome. According to Dailytrust, the Borno State Commander of the Agency, Iweanjunwa Okechukwu stated this at a press conference held in Maiduguri on Tuesday.
Okechukwu hinted that tramadol and cough syrup containing codeine were among the most abused drugs by young women and men. He explained that young men in the region used tramadol as performance enhancement drug. The Commander blamed the situation on the activities of Boko Haram, stressing that youths have resorted to drug for solace.
He appealed to the Federal Ministry of Health to check excessive production of large quantities of these drugs since there is no outbreak of cough ailment in the country.
