13 out of the 18 political parties in the country have reportedly threatened to boycott the upcoming February 25 and March 11 elections over the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This was made known on Monday by Kenneth Udeze, the national chairman of the Action Alliance (AA) at a press conference by the Forum of Chairmen of Nigerian Political Parties and the Forum of Candidates for the 2023 General Election where he also commended President Muhammadu Buhari on the redesign of the 200, 500 and 1,000 naira denominations.
He said, “We hereby announce that at least 13 out of the 18 political parties in Nigeria will not be interested in the 2023 general elections and indeed we shall withdraw our participation from the electoral process if the currency policies are suspended or canceled or if the deadline is further shifted.”
The group also criticized the governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states for filing a case at the Supreme Court for an extension of the February 10th deadline set by the apex bank.
CBN had initially declared January 31st as the initial deadline but shifted it to the new deadline because a large percentage of Nigerians could not access the newly redesigned naira notes.
