The Sokoto state government has banned members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) from embarking on any form of street procession. Barr. Suleiman Usman (SAN), the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Justice placed the ban on Wednesday at a press conference organized shortly after a Security Council meeting involving heads of security agencies and other critical stakeholders in the state.
Usman said the ban was necessitated by prevailing security challenges confronting the state and the nation in general.
“There are ongoing activities of Shiite members in the state, that could cause public disorder. If care is not taken, the peace of the state may be breached by this group. We, hereby, place a ban on any public gathering in public places. Anybody that flouts this order will have him or herself to blame,” he said.
Usman reminded the group that “under the Public Order Act, permission for any procession has to be sought, through the security agencies." He called on them to respect government's decision.
Meanwhile, all heads of Security Agencies reiterated their readiness to enforce government’s order in the state.
