An appeal court in Argentina confirmed eight people who took care of the football legend Diego Maradona will be tried for homicide, according to a ruling released on Wednesday following an investigation into his death from cardiac arrest. Argentine prosecutors accused the medical professionals of being involved in reckless and deficient home treatment of a patient, after coming to the conclusion in 2021 that Maradona would have had a better chance of survival with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility.
The defendants including neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov had in 2022, appealed to the court in San Isidro, northwest of Buenos Aires, that they should be accused of involuntary homicide instead of homicide with potential aggravating circumstances, considering the severity of the charges.
Maradona who died of a heart attack on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 was found dead in bed at a rented house in an exclusive Buenos Aires neighborhood two weeks after he was discharged from the hospital.
He was said to be recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot, after a long-term battle with cocaine and alcohol addictions.
