The Confederation of African Football, CAF, during the preliminary round draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON to be held in Morocco disclosed that the tournament will be played in the summer (July and August) instead of the usual winter games.

It can be recalled that earlier in February, CAF president Patrice Motsepe refused to confirm the dates of the next AFCON due to several uncertainties, However, a member of the competitions committee speaking on condition of anonymity, divulged to pressmen that “an agreement in principle between CAF and the Moroccan Football Federation for the AFCON to be held during the summer, more precisely in July and August 2025.

“This agreement was found with the support of FIFA after talks that began several months ago and which intensified during the last edition which finished this month in Ivory Coast.

The source also noted that “The dates currently proposed are July 20-August 16 or 17, 2025.”

Despite what the source may have disclosed, the global world football governing body FIFA has scheduled the "expanded" Club World Cup for June and July next year, which would clash with the proposed dates for the AFCON.
