An asteroid up to 40 metres in size and only discovered five days ago, is due to skim past the Earth on Friday. Asteroid 2018 CB will pass by at just less than one-fifth the distance between the Earth and the Moon. It was first spotted by the Catalina Sky Survey in Tucson, Arizona, a Nasa-funded project to record potentially hazardous asteroids. However, while the pass is relatively close in astronomical terms, it's nowhere near enough to be a threat.

Influential internet rights pioneer John Perry Barlow has died, aged 70.

Mr Barlow was a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) that campaigns on digital rights issues and was a director of the organisation for many years.

The world’s newest, most powerful rocket in decades is set to be launched. The Falcon Heavy rocket, built by the American private company SpaceX, is set to be launched for the first time Tuesday. SpaceX is in the business of making getting into orbit a lot cheaper, and Falcon Heavy is yet the latest example. According to the company, it will cost just $90 million per launch, a fraction of the price of similar heavy-lift rockets.

Waymo self-driving vehicle unit and ride-hailing firm Uber Technologies Inc settled a bitter legal dispute, allowing Uber’s new chief executive to move past one of the company’s many public controversies. The settlement announcement was made just before the fifth day of testimony was about to begin at a jury trial in San Francisco federal court. Uber agreed to pay equity valued at about $245 million as part of the deal between the rival technology companies, a Waymo representative said.
