Instagram has announced the discontinuation of the standalone IGTV app but will instead focus on keeping all videos in the main Instagram app. This was announced on Monday by the company in a blog post, adding that the decision was made to simplify its video format making it easier to create and watch videos on Instagram.

The company said, “Video is a huge part of why people enjoy Instagram, and we love how our creator community uses it to express themselves, collaborate with others, and connect with their followers. Reels continues to be a growing and important part of Instagram and we are excited to invest even more in this format”.

Instagram launched its standalone app, IGTV with the intention of competing with YouTube in terms of longer format video.

The company also intends to stop in-stream video ads, previously known as IGTV ads, and will begin testing ads in Reels where video creators can start earning ad revenue from Reels later this year.

The company however stated that creators who are actively monetizing with in-stream video ads will receive a temporary monthly payment based on recent earnings.
