The Central Bank of Nigerian Governor, Godwin Emifele has revealed that the newly redesigned naira note has now been made available in commercial banks for accessibility to the general public. This was made known by the apex bank Governor through his official Twitter handle when he visited President Buhari in his country home, Daura, Katsina state to brief the president about the naira redesign.
According to Emifele, the CBN's new rules concerning the naira and other bank transactions were not targeting anybody or a group of persons as being speculated in some quarters, but rather a policy that the apex bank deemed fit towards the development of the nation’s economy in general.
He called on Nigerians to embrace the new channels of transactions available for their daily financial dealings as has been made available by the CBN in a bid to encourage the drive towards a cashless society.
In his statement, “The newly redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes are now in banks and ready for issuance to members of the public. The currency redesign and [the] reintroduced cashless policies are not targeted at anybody but are for the good and development of the Nigerian economy. The CBN deferred the cashless policy severally to prepare and deepen Nigeria’s payments system infrastructure.”
The apex bank hopes that Nigerians will get used to cashless banking in no time soon as it was the general policy of president Buhari's administration towards the actualization of a cashless society in the modern world.
