FAAN To Shutdown Lagos Airport Domestic Runway For 90days

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed in a statement on 7th July 2022 by its Ag. General Manager Corporate Affairs Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbase that it will be shutting down the 18L/36R runway of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos from 8th July 2022 to 5th September 2022. This is to install the Airfield Lighting (AFL) that has been down for fifteen years. More so, an alternate route will be provided to ensure seamless operation by diverting to the 18R/36L (international runway) as stated by FAAN.

A statement by Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbase, the Ag. General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, further disclosed that Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has already been published and disseminated accordingly, adding that the effort of FAAN was geared towards improving safety and efficiency in the sector.

The NOTAM, read, “DNMM would be closed from 0000-23000 08/07/2022 to 05/09/2022 to effect the repairs.” It was, however, gathered that traffic would be diverted to 18R/36L of the international airport for seamless operations.

Mrs. Hope said: “As part of efforts aimed at improving safety and efficiency of flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has concluded arrangements to complete the installation of CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting system on Runway 18L/36R.

”The project will commence effectively on Friday, July 8, 2022, and is expected to last 90 days. Consequently, Runway 18L/36R will be closed to flight operations during this time.

”During the two-month-long closure, FAAN would be installing approach lights, runway lights ( threshold, centerline, edge lights … etc. So that runway 18L/ 36R returns to full 24/7 operations as soon as possible.”

She stated further that FAAN held a meeting with airline operators on July 5, 2022, where the timeframe and modalities were communicated to them.
