Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday raided Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, a major hub of Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in the Federal Capital Territory. According to a source, the raid was a result of weeks of surveillance by the Commission to identify and dislodge currency speculators who are allegedly mopping up available foreign currencies especially the United States of America dollars, thereby causing scarcity.
The source further disclosed that the anti-graft agency is working on procured intelligence that some individuals with a massive inflow of Naira have mobilized resources and are buying up available US dollars to either hoard or smuggle it out of Nigeria.
In a bid to expand its operations, personnel of the Commission have also been deployed to major airports in the country and could also be deployed to major commercial cities like Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.
In the last few weeks, the Naira has experienced massive devaluation and is currently at about N710 per dollar at the parallel section of the foreign exchange market.
