The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned Olamide's hit single "Science Student" over allegation that the song promotes consumption of illicit substances/drug abuse. The NBC which issued the "Not To Be Broacdcast (NTBB)" warning to all radio and television stations in the country said it consider the song unfit for broadcast in Nigeria.
The Head of Public Affairs at the Commission, Haji Jimada who confirmed the position of the NBC to Tribune said the ban was in line with their mandate or regulating content meant to be aired on radio and television stations.
According to her;
“NBC does not ban music. Our mandate is on what goes on Radio and TV. Olamide’s Science Student has been declared ‘Unfit for broadcast.’ The profligate mention and the subtle promotion of illegal drugs declared the song unlawful.
“We have communicated all our licensees for compliance or they will face sanctions."
Meanwhile Olamide has debunked claims that the song promotes drug abuse. His recent post on the matter reads;
"Since the release of #ScienceStudent, the support has been massive. As you are all sharing, dancing, singing along to this relatable music of mine, I want you all to take some time to reflect on the subject, say no to drug abuse. Don’t abuse alcohol. stop mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink responsibly. Don’t aspire the ‘highness state’ but a state of purpose fulfillment and passion discovery. Together let’s put an end to drug abuse and save as many lives as possible. The video will be out soon and I can’t wait for you all to see it.
