Despite efforts by the military and religious clerics to pressure the ousted President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe to vacate his position, Reuters reports that the Zimbabwean leader has remained defiant, insisting that he remains the constitutionally recognized president. The report claimed that a Catholic Priest, Fidelis Mukori acting as a mediator between the Military and Mugabe had attempted to facilitate a bloodless transition of powers but the ousted leader refused to concede power.
Reuters further hinted that a Zimbabwean intelligence report made available to it suggests that former security Chief Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was ousted as vice-president this month, has been mapping out a post-Mugabe vision with the military and opposition for more than a year.
A swift move that validated the intelligence report cited by Reuters was the return of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to the country. He has been receiving cancer treatment in Britain and South Africa, but returned to Harare late on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, some regional Ministers including the President of South Africa are expected to meet today in Botswana to resolve the crisis.
