Indian Coast Guard on Sunday seized over 3, 000 pounds of heroin in what the country described as the largest drug bust in history. The illicit substance which was discovered aboard a merchant ship off the Coast of the Western State of Gujara is believed to be worth over $545 million.
According to a statement issued by the spokesman of Coast Guard, Commandant R K Singh, the Panama-registered ship was coming into the country from Iran before it was intercepted in an operation that lasted three days. He described the seizure as the biggest in the country's history.
"This is the biggest catch of narcotics in the present times".
The statement disclosed that though the ship had a crew of eight, no arrest has been made so far. The crew when arrested could face a minimum of 10 years imprisonment for heroin smuggling offences in accordance with the Narcotic Laws
He listed other agencies involved in the operation to include the Indian Navy and the Intelligence Bureau.
