The planned joint military drill between the United States and South Korea known as 'Ulchi-Freedom Guardian' is reportedly heightening tension in the Korean Peninsula. Although both countries believe the annual 10-day military drills which will commence on August 21 are defensive in nature, North Korea leader, Kim Jong UN claims the military exercise may be intended to facilitate possible invasion of N. Korea. Kim who has called for the cancellation of the exercise warned that

"If the planned fire of power demonstration is carried out as the US is going more reckless, it will be the most delightful historic moment when the Hwasong artillerymen will wring the windpipes of the Yankees and point daggers at their necks"

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was also quoted by CNN as calling for dialogue and political settlement to the rising tension in the region. The report further called for the suspension of military exercise in the area.

"The current situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly complex and sensitive. We hope to see the relevant sides 'extinguish fire' through their words and actions instead of 'adding fuel' amid tensions. We hope to see them improve mutual trust, and move toward the goal of preserving peace and stability on the peninsula as well as realizing the denuclearization of the peninsula."

Meanwhile, the US says the exercise will continue as planned.
