China on Sunday displayed new lethal military hardware in a parade presided over by Xi Jinping as part of programmes to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The parade which was announced on Saturday came hours after Donald Trump criticized Beijing over failure to rein in North Korea to halt its Nuclear Programme.
Trump had stated in a series of tweet that "I am very disappointed in China. Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue. China could easily solve this problem!"
In a brief speech, Xi commended the Military on their efforts toward securing the integrity of the country and urged them to remain loyal to the party. He also stated that "the world is not peaceful and peace needs to be defended. Our heroic military has the confidence and capabilities to preserve national sovereignty, security and interests... and to contribute more to maintaining world peace."
More than 100 war planes reportedly flew overhead while about 600 types of weapons were displayed. It was gathered that nearly half of the weapons were making their debut in the public.
