The Court of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) has convicted the embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, after finding him guilty of false assets declaration.
As presided over by, Danladi Umar, the Tribunal lead Judge, he declared that Mr, Onnoghen should forfeit the funds in his five accounts which he was accused of not disclosing and having failed to tell the court how he acquired them.
The tribunal added that it was practically obvious that Mr, Onnoghen acquired the fund in question fraudulently having failed to convince the court how he came about this huge amount.
The tribunal invoked the full provision of section 23 of the code of conduct law which gives him the power to remove Mr, Onnoghen from office. It ordered that Onnoghen should be barred from the office in the next ten years.
Mr. Onnoghen had weeks earlier transmitted his notice of retirement to President Muhammadu Buhari in line with the recommendation of the National Judicial Council.
However, the presidency is, yet to respond on Mr. Onnoghen’s retirement.
