In a bid to end the ongoing nationwide strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), 2 academic unions, the Congress of National University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) registered with the Federal Government (FG) on Tuesday. The Minister of Labor and Productivity, Chris Ngige presented certificates of registration to the two newly-established unions.
Since February 14, 2022, ASUU has been on strike as lecturers of public universities protest for an improved welfare package, unpaid allowances, implementation of the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS), among other demands from the Federal Government.
The leadership of the House of Representatives recently met with ASUU and relevant government authorities over the prolonged strike.
The FG and ASUU have been at loggerheads and no concrete agreement has been reached between the two parties signifying that the strike would not end soon.
Analysts suggest that the registration of CONUA and NAMDA would provide improved negotiations and be instrumental in ending the 7-months long ASUU strike.
