The Police Command in Kano State on Monday alerted the public of planned protest by some groups of political party supporters over the verdict of the Appeal Court in Abuja which sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. There is apprehension that the protest could culminate into violence in the state. According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Yaruna Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command had taken appropriate security measures to prevent escalation of tensions that may lead to breakdown of law and order.
“The information revealed that the intention of the protesters is to shut down the state in an action which may likely result in violence.
“It is on this note that the police command issue this warning to residents of the state to be extra careful as whoever intends to conduct any protest or procession should do so in accordance with the provisions of the law,” Kiyawa said.
“Furthermore, you will all recall that prior to the court ruling, the leadership of both NNPP and APC had been invited by the Kano state police command where a peace accord was signed on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
The statement further noted that the Commissioner Muhammad Usaini Gumel calls on residents of the state to remain patriotic and shun unlawful gathering, protest or procession that could trigger violence in the state.
SP Kiyawa also noted that joint security teams have been deployed to strategic locations to safeguard peace and order throughout the state.
“Whoever attempts to disrupt the peace in the state will be arrested and made to face the wrath of the law.”
