Following plans by some members of the National Assembly to override President Buhari's decision to withhold assent to the recently passed Electoral Act Amendment Bill, some Senators including Ali Ndume and Abdullahi Adamu have moved to frustrate the effort. Speaking with Dailytrust on Tuesday, Senator Ndume said over 43 senators have indicated interest to ensure that the amendment is forgotten because it is not in the interest of the country.
“If they make any move to override the president, we will block them. We are over 43 and more persons have indicated interest today. We are calling on our colleagues not to push the issue further because it is not in public interest.”
The Senator said another reason why the bill should not be signed into law is that it would force INEC to spend more in the conduct of elections since the elections would be spread to three weeks.
“If the elections are conducted twice, the security implications would be less than when it is spread to three weeks as proposed by the bill,” he said.
Earlier, Senator Adamu had told Vigil360 that "we watching carefully in order to know the next step to take." He vowed to thwart any plot to override the President's veto.
