Former Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has throw his weight behind the House of Reps members that are advocating for Nigeria to revert back into parliamentary system of government, saying Nigeria cannot survive executive presidential system. According to the former interior minister, presidential system is responsible for budget deficit cankerworm that has continued to under develop the country.
Aregbesola stated this at the ongoing National Dialogue on the constitutional future of Nigeria in Honour of a renowned constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, organised by the Patriots (A Pan Nigerian Group of Eminent National Leaders of Thought) with the theme, “Lawful Procedures for Actualising a People’s Constitution for Nigeria.”
Accordingly, Aregbesola has spend about 20 years of his life in a public office as he was a Commissioner for Eight Years in Lagos State and later became the governor of Osun State for another eight years and finally served as interior Minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari for four years.
The former governor said, “Can Nigeria survive executive presidential representation? The answer is no”.
According to him, productive representation must take the place of residence, as against being practiced and therefore call for revert back into parliamentary system of governance.
He insisted that, “In seeking appropriate democratic representation let’s look at production as a basis of representation. We don’t have the best form of representation. People are engaged more in production. Productive acts and those engaged in production should be given opportunity to elect their best.”
