Barcelona has announced that Martinez has completed his move to Camp Nou after leaving Athletic Club. Martinez’s contract with Athletic expired at the end of the 2022/2023 campaign making him a free agent. He moved to Barcelona on free transfer making him the Catalans’ third signing of the summer after the arrival of IIkay Gundogan and Mikayil Faye.

Martinez, 32, had been linked with a switch to Barcelona in January and the club has now confirmed his arrival.

A statement from Barcelona reads, "An agreement has been reached between FC Barcelona and Inigo Martinez for the player to join the Club after his contract with Athletic Club ended.

"The player is set to sign a two-year deal that ends on June 30, 2025, with the release clause set at 400 million euro.

"The Club will provide further details about Inigo Martinez's presentation as a new first-team player in due course."

Martinez, who came through at Real Sociedad and played for them for seven seasons in the top flight, moved to Athletic in January 2017.

He played 177 times for Athletic, scoring eight goals and winning the Spanish Super Cup in 2021, as well as reaching two Copa del Rey finals.
