Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, is set to boost its achievements in science and technology with the launch of Birds 1 satellites into space from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA, on Thursday, June 1.
The satellites comprising five CubeSats, belong to Japan, Ghana, Mongolia, Nigeria and Bangladesh.
Nigeria’s Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, is set to boost its achievements in science and technology with the launch of Birds 1 satellites, comprising five CubeSats belonging to Japan, Ghana, Mongolia, Nigeria and Bangladesh, into space from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA, on Thursday, June 1.
The satelight which will be launced by the SpaceX Falcon9 rocket was designed, built and owned by FUTA in collaboration with National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, Abuja, and Kyushu Institute of Technology Japan.
Nigeria is the represented in the project by Mr. Ibukun Adebolu, of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, FUTA. The CubeSats is expected to docked to the International Space Station, ISS, where the satellites will be deployed into lower orbit during the last week of June.
The aim of NigeriaEdusat-1 is to domesticate the satellite technology in FUTA for research, resources and environmental management; and sustainable socio-economic development. It will have ripple effects on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in the country.
