American online video sharing platform, YouTube has on Thursday announced a global $100 million 'Black Voices Funds' where Nigerian artists and creators can apply for grants. This was made known in a statement by Alex Okosi, Managing Director, Emerging Markets YouTube EMEA, saying the global fund would run for the next three years, supporting Black YouTubers. He said the fund was established to enable and encourage artists and creators to thrive on YouTube.

In a bid to develop the nation digitally, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the transfer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami made this known in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mrs. Uwa Suleiman, saying that the president's approval was based on the critical role of the NIMC in the actualization of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy for a Digital Nigeria (NDEPS) objectives.

The iPhone 12 could see a big upgrade in the form of air gesture controls. Using a time-of-flight (ToF) camera inside its display notch, the iPhone could help give selfies a high-quality bokeh effect, create 3D maps of objects, or help make Face ID more secure, which previous patents have hinted at. However, what's particularly interesting is the idea of using in-air gestures. This likely upgrade was spotted by Patently Apple (via Forbes), who revealed a patent concerning a next-generation depth sensor that Apple could bring into its flagship phones.

The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Facebook, Google, and Twitter have agreed to voluntarily testify at a virtual hearing before the United States Senate Commerce Committee set for October 28, 2020. The CEOs will be testifying on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, a law that protects tech companies from liability over contents and posts by users. Facebook and Twitter confirmed on Friday that their CEOs, Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey will appear before the Senate Committee, while a spokeswoman for the committee confirmed all three CEOs would appear, confirming Google's Sundar Pichai appearance.

World's Largest LS Power Battery Storage System Comes Online

LS Power, a US power and energy infrastructure owner have put on stream what it describes as the largest grid battery in the world, with a capacity that will reach 250 MW by the end of August. According to LS Power VP of Energy Storage Cody Hill, construction of the system was handled by McCarthy Building Companies, while NEC built the system with LG Chem batteries and SMA inverters. Although LS Power has not yet shared that project's MWh capacity, it will almost positively be between 1 GWh and 1.5 GWh once completed, as it's uncommon to see large-scale storage outside of the four-to-six hour duration range.

Qualcomm's new Quick Charge 5 unveiled today July 27, promises to get drained Android phones from 0% to 50% battery power after 5 minutes of charging. It's the first fast-charging platform capable of supporting more than 100 watts of charging power. Supported by the Snapdragon 865 and 865+ so far the phone has the required PMIC hardware. The increased voltage tolerance and hardware changes allow Quick Charge 5 to be up to 10x faster than the original quick charge specification, and 4x faster than the previous generation Quick Charge 4.
