World AIDS Day: Apple Raises Over $160 Million Via Sales Of RED Products

Tech giant Apple on Thursday, the eve of World AIDS Day, announced that through its participation in the (RED) initiative, it had till date raised over $160 million for the Global Fund, an international organisation that raises funds to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, have pledged amplified efforts by the ministry to put up Nigeria in the score board of emerging technological advancement particularly in Artificial Intelligence towards strengthening the economy.

Deputy Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST), Mr AbdulGaniyu Aminu, quoted the minister during a recent visit of members of the African Information and Communication Technology Alliance.

MekaMons gaming robots built by Nigerian-Briton Silas Adekunle are now being rolled out to customers by Apple stores in the US and UK. It has been on sale since November 16 for $299.95.

The four-legged gaming robot could be seamlessly controlled using a companion app for augmented reality gameplay which can be downloaded on iPhones and other smart phones.

Dr Eucharia Ngozi-Oparah, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology, (NILEST) says the military boots produced by the institute, ranked as one of the best globally.

She made the disclosure on Monday while receiving participants of the National Defence College (NDC) Course 26, Abuja during a visit to the institute in Zaria, Kaduna State.

More than two million mobile phones in New Zealand will make an unfamiliar sound when the country tries its new emergency mobile alert system on Sunday.

“The past year has shown us how important fast and reliable information is when emergencies strike,” Sarah Stuart-Black from the Ministry of Civil Defence said in a statement in Wellington.

The service will not only work for phones containing New Zealand SIM cards, but also it is expected to work on all phones that are enabled to receive cell-broadcast alerts.

WeRobotics have committed to developing Drones that scatter swarms of sterile male mosquitoes which cannot produce offspring when they mate with females over wide areas to help stop the spread of diseases such as malaria.

The drones could spread the mosquitoes in areas where these diseases prevail and such areas that are difficult to access where roads do not exist.
