Chad Seeks Electricity Supply From Nigeria

The Republic of Chad has formally requested the Nigerian government to connect them with the Nigerian electricity grid, assisting the country with electricity supply. The request was presented by Abakar Saleh Chachaimi, the Chadian Ambassador to Nigeria while on a visit to the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman in Abuja. Speaking, Chachaimi stressed the need for assistance, saying the connection will further strengthen the collaboration between the two countries.

Responding, the Minister welcomed the development, informing the Chadian envoy of the ongoing bi-lateral agreement which Nigeria supplies Niger and Benin Republic with electricity.

Also, he noted that under the West African Power Pool (WAPP) whose objective include promoting power exchange among ECOWAS member states. This making Nigeria, Burkina-Faso, Niger and Benin Republic partner on the establishment of an 875 KM 330KV electricity line called "North Core Transmission Line".

"This project got the concurrent acceptance of the World Bank (WB), African Development Bank (AfDB) and the French Development Agency (AFD) to finance different segments of the proposed transmission line. As of September 2019, all the Financing became effective and the implementation structure for the project has earlier been established with Project Implementation Unit (PIU) located here in Abuja," the minister said.

Engr. Mamman further said the request came at an appropriate time, assuring the ambassador that a thorough evaluation of the projects under the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme (TREP) for possible integration of the request.

"I, therefore, direct the Transmission Company of Nigeria, whose representatives are part of this meeting, to come up with a business case and implementation modalities. Based on that, we will write to the Presidency to secure all the necessary approvals," the minister stated.

The minister explained that Nigeria with abundant gas and resources has the potential to generate and export low-cost electricity to the sub-region.
