According to reports, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI) are mobilizing their members to join the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Tuesday October, 3, 2023.
The National Executive Council of both the TUC and NLC stated that the planned strike action would kick off, if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s October 1st independence anniversary broadcast failed to address their grievances.
Also, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has also declared their intention to join the solidarity strike with other workers’ unions.
The unions are planning an indefinite strike as a result of the Federal Government’s alleged anti-labour policies, high-price of petroleum products, amongst other grievances due to the removal of fuel subsidy.
The Federal Government has attempted on several occasions to avoid the nationwide strike action but the workers’ unions have been persistent that the government responds to their demands.
