The President of France, Emmanuel Macron has announced on Sunday about the withdrawal of its ambassador from Niger Republic, followed by its military troops of about 1,500 soldiers stationed in Niger, as part of the anti-terrorism security force stationed in the Sahel region.
Macron said its ambassadors and several diplomats would return to France in the next few hours while adding that “in the weeks and months to come, we will consult with the putschists, because we want this to be done peacefully.”
The colonial masters of Niger Republic had kicked against the coup in Niger Republic in July 2023 which overthrew President Mohammed Bazoum and also insisted on his reinstatement.
Niger’s military junta had told the French ambassador, Sylvain Itte, to vacate the country but France kicked against it while also failing to recognize the military regime as legitimate.
