The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) has resolved to throw its weight behind female politicians who indicate interest to vie for elective position in the 2019 general elections. The Executive Director of the body, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngeuku who stated this in a chat with NAN, hinted that the move was targeted at increasing the number of women in Nigerian politics.
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngeuku who was at the Nigeria House to meet Prof. Tijjani Bande, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN had earlier visited Nigeria in July alongside UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed to seek ways to address challenges confronting women in the country.
“We also were in Nigeria to discuss the issue of women’s participation in politics. We were also in Nigeria for how we need to increase the number of women participation in politics in the next elections and the strategies to do that”.
She said to achieve this task, the UN would engage Civil Society Organizations and other relevant groups.
“So we will be working with other civil society to make it work”
