The All Progressives Congress (APC) did not deliberate on the adoption of President Muhammadu Buhari for a second term at its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting which held Tuesday in Abuja.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi disclosed this while sopeaking to news men shortly after the meeting.
According to the publicity secretary, the NEC however did pass a vote of confidence on the President in view of the achievements of his administration.
Abdullahi however admitted that an unidentified party leader had asked out fo trun that the NEC moves and adopts a motion to endorse Buhari for a second term, but that the matter was never contemplated let alone considered.
“I am making this clarification so that nobody goes carry the news that NEC has endorsed Buhari for a second term. What happened was that we passed a vote of confidence on Mr. President.
“Someone mentioned within the meeting – someone that is not even identified – that we should endorse the president for 2019, but that was not even considered or adopted,” he clarified.
The Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, also corroborated Abdullahi’s position when he told journalist that the NEC meeting did not discuss the President’s 2019 candidacy.
“Today’s meeting was not about 2019 elections. When we talk about 2019 in the context of the agenda you saw, we are talking about membership registration, the drive for membership and others.
“We are not talking about elections. Even though there was a motion on the floor that calls for a vote of confidence on the President. Some of us felt it was not necessary because there is nowhere that his confidence is shaking. But the motion was taken and passed.
“But there was a second leg to that motion which calls for the adoption of the candidature of the President, but it was deferred for now and no decision was taken because that is not the major reason why we are here.”
Earlier on Monday, the National Caucus of the party at a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, also passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the party under John Odigie-Oyegun.
