The Senate will upon resumption next Tuesday, summon the Vice Chancellors of 38 universities over alleged increase in tuition fees.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Barau Jibrin disclosed this on Tuesday while reacting to a statement by the University of Ibadan chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that 38 universities increased their tuition over inadequate funding by the Federal Government.
Chairman of the ASUU chapter, Deji Omole, had on Monday, alleged that atleast 38 univerisities have increase their tuitions over “poor funding by the federal and state governments.”
He listed some the universities to include University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), University of Nigeria (UNN), Obafemi Awolowo University, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Bayero University, University of Abuja, Usman Danfodiyo University and even the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) among several others.
Senator Jibrin said the VCs of the various universities will be invited to justify the alleged increments.
According to the Senator, “there are abuses of IGR in almost all the Universities. We have beamed our searchlight on it. We will ensure proper utilisation of the IGR including tuition fees."
The Senate resumes next Tuesday after taking a break to celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr.
