Award-winning and world records holder Tobi Amusan has been charged by the Athletic Integrity Unit (AIU) with an anti-doping rules violation for being absent for drug tests for 12 months. Amusan made this public on her Instagram account on the 18th of July 2023, responding to the charge, she declared herself "a clean athlete" and vowed to contest the allegations immediately so she can defend her title at the upcoming World Championships next month in Budapest.
The 26-year-old said she was “tested within days” of her third alleged missed test. “Today, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has charged me with an alleged rule violation for having three missed tests in 12 months,”
“I intend to fight this charge and will have my case decided by a tribunal of 3 arbitrators before the start of next month’s World Championships. “I am a clean athlete, and I am regularly; (maybe more than usual) tested by the AIU – I was tested within days of my third ‘missed test.’ I have faith that this will be resolved in my favor and that I will be competing at the World Championships in August.” She wrote.
Under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules, any combination of 3 whereabouts failures (Filing Failure and/or Missed Test) within a period of 12 months constitutes an anti-doping rule violation, for which the applicable sanction is 2 years’ ineligibility subject to a reduction to a minimum of 1 year depending on the degree of fault.
Amusan won the Diamond League meet in Silesia on Sunday, July 16, her second win in the series this season after a victory in Stockholm.
