Kanye West Faces Lawsuit After Sampling Sermon Without Permission

A Texas pastor has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against American rapper and record producer Ye who is formerly known as Kanye West over a sample featured in the song “Come to Life.” Bishop David P. Moten alleges that about 20% of the Donda single is lifted from a sermon he delivered at Victoria, Texas’ the Joy of the Lord Worship Center in 2011, according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday at the U.S. District Court in Dallas, Billboard reports. A portion of Moten’s sermon, “My soul cries out Hallelujah and I thank God for saving me” is heard at the beginning of “Come to Life,” with that excerpt sampled throughout the song. Moten claims that West and his team did not seek permission to use the sample prior to releasing it on Donda.

NBM, Others Slam N1Bn Libel Suit Against Linda Ikeji

The Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa and three others have slammed a N1 billion lawsuit against Nigerian online blogger, Linda Ikeji for libel and defamation. The suit with the number EHC/210/2021 at the Delta State High Court had Registered Trustees of NBM, Olorogun Ese Kakor, Olorogun Felix Kupa, and Mayor Onyebueke as claimants with Linda Ikeji as the sole defendant. The plaintiffs through their counsel, Chief E.K. Agbroko are praying the court for an award of N1 billion and an unreserved apology to be published in Ikeji's blog and two national newspapers, among others, however, the defendant was absent in court and without legal representation. The counsel asserted that on 19th October 2019, the blogger published an article in her blog, defaming the plaintiffs by referring to them as "Black Axe" and criminals, which were names different from their organization.
