The United Nations (UN) Agencies have call on the Niger Republic Junta leaders to provide corridor for humanitarian so that intervention can reach millions of displaced persons at risk during the interruption of governance. Military have seized power in Niger Republic in July through a coup d’ tire leading to the closure of all air space and land borders leading into the country.
According to the UN refugee agency, Niger Republic is home to more than 665,000 internally Displaced Persons, IDPs following a violent outbreak of attacks.
Also following the border restriction by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, the situation has left many vulnerable in desperate need including asylum seekers.
It was learned that on Thursday, 31st August, the Niger Coup leaders had announced the suspension of all humanitarians and Non-governmental organisations activities from delivering anything to persons within the country.
However, the IOM regional director, ,” Christopher Gascon, was quoted as saying “IOM strongly advocates for the authorities to establish a humanitarian corridor to enable the organisation to organise the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of vulnerable migrants stranded in Niger to their countries of origin.
According to Gacson, the corridor would “facilitate the delivery of aid” to the country’s regions affected the most by the recent events.
“More than 710,000 individuals, including refugees, asylum seekers, and internally displaced persons, are displaced in Niger,” he added.
The UN Agency revealed the border closures and airspace restrictions have triggered transformations in migration patterns.
