President Bola Tinubu Signs First Amendment To Constitution

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday signed an amendment to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Fifth Amendment) (Number 37), 2023, his first signing of law as the President. A statement by the State House Director of Information, Abiodun Oladunjoye, said President Tinubu signed the Constitution Amendment into law in exercising the powers vested in him under the 1999 Constitution.

INEC Releases Final List Of Candidates For Bayelsa, Imo, Kogi Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates for the November 11 election in Kogi, Bayelsa, and Imo States. INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, said the approval of the list followed a meeting held by the Commission on Tuesday in Abuja. He said, ” At its regular meeting held today Tuesday 6th June 2023, the Commission approved the final list of candidates for the three off-cycle Governorship elections scheduled to hold in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states on Saturday 11th November 2023.

Court Restrains EFCC, ICPC, DSS From Detaining ex-Gov Yari

A Federal High Court sitting in the nation's capital has restrained the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Department of State Services (DSS) from detaining the ex-Governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari. This order was issued by Justice Dontus Okorowo in a court ruling on an ex-parte motion filed and argued for Yari by his Lawyer, Micheal Aondoaka, (SAN) on 5TH June 2023. The judge ordered the respondents (EFCC, ICPC, and DSS) to show cause in the next adjourned date on why the prayers sought on the motion ex-parte should not be granted. “The respondents were, however, restrained from detaining the applicant until the return date for the order to show cause,” he ruled.

Subsidy Removal: President Tinubu Directs NEC On Palliatives 

President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Economic Council to come up with inputs on palliatives and the minimum wage review as part of measures to cushion the effect of hardship experienced by Nigerians owing to subsidy removal. Speaking during a meeting with members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Tinubu directed NEC led by Vice President Kashim Shettima to mobilise various interventions to assist Nigerians. The President described the level of impoverishment in the country as “unacceptable,” urging state governors to collaborate with the Federal Government to tackle poverty nationwide. He encouraged political leaders to downplay their differences and jointly focus on alleviating the sufferings and pains of the people.

Subsidy Removal: President Tinubu Will Alleviate Hardship – NLC, TUC Assures 

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC), yesterday explained that it suspended its scheduled strike because it acknowledged the willingness of the federal government for continuous engagement and to offer reasonable palliatives in due course to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal on petrol. During an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting yesterday, the president of NLC, Mr. Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja, said the strike, which was aimed at forcing the Federal Government to reverse the decision to stop fuel subsidy which resulted in over 200 percent hike in the pump price of petrol, was suspended for some reasons including, the mood of the nation, in view of the outcome of the presidential elections still being challenged at the tribunal, the need to pursue national stability and the restraining order obtained by the FG from the National Industrial Court (NIC), as reasons for the decision to shelve the planned industrial action.

Supreme Court Dismisses Atiku's Suit Against Tinubu, Shettima Double Nomination

The Supreme Court on 26th May 2023, dismissed the suit by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) seeking the disqualification of President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and its Vice Kashim Shettima, due to double nomination. The PDP, in the suit, had claimed that Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the provisions of sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022. The opposition argued that Shettma violated the Electoral Act by allowing himself to be nominated twice for two different offices Borno Central Senatorial district and Vice President.
