The leadership of Tiv Youth Council and Arewa Youth Assembly have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris. The groups in a joint statement signed by Mike Msuaan, who is President of Tiv Youth Council; and Muhammad Salihu, Speaker, Arewa Youth Assembly, said their calls for the extension of the IG’s tenure were as a result of their desire for free, fair and credible elections.

The expressed fears that the removal of the IGP, few weeks to the general elections could derail security arrangements already put in place ahead of the elections.

“Having a new IG at this crucial time will be dangerous to the security arrangements of the general elections considering the time frame.

“This decision of ours to call for the extension of the tenure of the IGP, Ibrahim Idris, is borne out of our desire to have free, fair, safe and credible elections. There is no sentiment attached, rather we are only heeding the voice of wisdom.

“We believe this is the time for him (Idris) to give his very best of experience in this critical assignment, having been part and head of the security architectural design for the 2019 general elections. Replacing him at this time, therefore, will definitely distort the arrangement,” he added
