Nigeria on June 9, joined countries like Canada, Israel, Ireland and Great Britain who have official verified Twitter accounts.
The Twitter handle, @Nigeria, recorded its first tweet at 3.16pm.
The tweet which read: “Welcome to the Twitter handle for the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Africa's largest economy, and most populous country,” has since been retweeted about 1,600 and has over 300 replies.
The handle has since enjoyed goodwill tweets and exchanges from notable countries, including Sweden, Ukraine and world powers, Israel.
@Sweden had tweeted “Welcome @nigeria !!” and @Israel “Welcome to the club, dear @Nigeria - Happy tweeting!” Both handles tweeted on June 10.
@Ukraine was the more effusive of the “international” social media goodwill, tweeting “Hey @Nigeria! Welcome to the brave new world of twiplomacy! Looking forward to reading interesting insights about your country.”
The @Nigeria handle has over 9,000 followers so far.
Israel has over 393,000 followers but has been on Twitter since July, 2009.
