Facebook Losses Daily Users For The First Time Ever

Social media giant Facebook has seen its daily active users (DAUs) drop for the first time in its 18-year history. Facebook’s parent company Meta Networks disclosed that DAUs dropped to 1.929bn in the three months to the end of December, compared to 1.930bn in the previous quarter. The loss was greatest in Africa and Latin America, suggesting that the company’s product is saturated globally-and that its long quest to add as many users as possible has peaked.

Jack Dorsey's Payment Company To Build Bitcoin Mining System

Former Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey has on Thursday announced that his Fintech startup, Block (formerly known as Square ) is building an open bitcoin mining system, making bitcoin mining easier for miners. “We’re officially building an open bitcoin mining system,” Dorsey said in a Tweet. “If we do this, we’d follow our hardware wallet model: build in the open in collaboration with the community,” he added.

MTN Partners Nigerian Creatives On Arts, Culture

The MTN Foundation, a corporate social investment initiative of MTN Nigeria has announced that it is partnering with Nigerian creatives in arts and culture, supporting youth development in Nigeria. The foundation in a statement explained that it would be supporting three Theater productions during the Yuletide season, between December 23, 2021, and January 3, 2022.

OPPO Working To Launch Affordable Galaxy Z Flip Competitor

BBK-owned smartphone maker Oppo is working on a clamshell folding phone, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip3, and it aims to deliver it by Q3 of this year. The Oppo flip phone will be cheaper than the $999, €1,049 Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. Other than the clamshell form factor and the Q3 of 2022 timeline, the last bit of information is that the foldable will be under the Oppo Find series, signalling that it will be a flagship.

BlackBerry OS Devices To Officially Stop Working From January 4

On January 4th, BlackBerry OS devices will lose the ability to make calls, send SMS, and even dial 9-1-1. BlackBerry OS devices would likely also experience connectivity issues using Wi-Fi and mobile devices that still run its own operating system. BlackBerry phones have been declared dead many times over since falling from the height of their popularity more than a decade ago, but this time the company will finally end service for its legacy devices. BlackBerry tried to reboot itself in 2013 with a new OS, BlackBerry 10 (which failed). Also in 2015 it switched to making Android devices (which also failed). Then, in 2016, it began licensing its brand to third-party manufacturers like TCL. 

FG: Digital Tokens Will Be Introduced To Replace NIN Slip

The Federal Government (FG) has announced the introduction of digital tokens to replace the National Identification Number (NIN) slip.
This was disclosed in Abuja at a stakeholder’s workshop on NIN Tokenization Solution organized by the National Identity Management Commission. The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami who was represented by the Director-General of NIMC, Aliyu Abubakar disclosed that the implementation of the digital tokens would begin on January 1, 2022.
