At least seven people have died after a freight train derailed in the South-East Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said on Monday. The Interior Minister, Deoda Kapenda said the incident occurred on Saturday, at Buyofwe village of Lualaba province with seven people dead and 14 "seriously injured". “The toll could rise because a large number of clandestine passengers were trapped under the upturned wagons,” Kapenda added.
The eight-wagon train was travelling from Tenke in Lualaba to Kananga, in the neighbouring province of Kasai-Central when the train came off the rails in Buyofwe, around 200 kilometres from the provincial capital.
