At least Seventeen people have been killed and scores injured in a “terrorist attack” on a Turkish restaurant in the center of the Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, the government says. “A terrorist attack at Istanbul restaurant on Ouagadougou’s Kwame Nkrumah Avenue claimed 17 victims, their nationalities are yet to be confirmed,” a government statement on Monday said, adding that 12 people had been injured.

The violent post-election protest that greeted the recently concluded Kenya's presidential election has claimed 24 lives nationwide according to a rights group known as Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. It would be recalled that Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the poll on Friday after defeating opposition leader Raila Odinga for a second five-year term. Kenyatta reportedly secured about 54% of the votes while his rival received a total of 45% votes.

The Chairman of Kenys’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati declared Mr Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the presidential race after keeping the world waiting for hours in the disputed elections.  Mr Kenyatta amassed 54.3% of votes, ahead of his rival Raila Odinga, with 44.7%. The declaration was boycotted by representatives of the opposition coalition, led by Raila Odinga.

Kenya's opposition leader, Raila Odinga who recently lost the Presidential election to Uhuru Kenyatta has called on his supporters to embark on nationwide strike from Monday over the disputed election result. Odinga made the call on Sunday during a mass rally held at Kibera, the largest slum in the capital of Nairobi. He said the move was to protest the alleged stealing of the people's mandate as well as to mourn supporters who were killed by security forces during peaceful protest after the poll.

China’s President Xi Jinping has urged all the concerned parties to exercise restraint and advocated for a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue. In a phone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, he said all sides need to avoid words or action that raises tensions.

South Sudan

Heavy fighting has reportedly erupted between South Sudan’s warring factions in the town of Pagak, the main rebel headquarters located at the Ethiopian border. The fighting broke out hours after a plane from Juba took off from Pagak airport.
