Strike: ASUU To Hold Crucial Meeting Thursday

Embattled Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has scheduled a meeting of its National Executive Council for Thursday to consider the planned call-off of the nine months old strike by lecturers in federal universities across the country. Preparatory to the NEC meeting expected to take place at its headquarters in Abuja, the union had directed zonal branches branches to commence the traditional voting today to take a position over the ongoing strike by the union, which will be transmitted to the NEC for final decision. The development came as reports had emerged across social media platforms earlier on Tuesday, claiming that the union had called off the almost 8-month old strike and subsequently directed members to resume academic activities on October 17.

The Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian Universities, ASUU say the union is still studying the Appeal Court judgement before making any comment as the industrial court judgement directing ASUU to suspend the strike has been affirmed by the Appeal Court ASUU was given the shock of its life today when the Appeal Court today upheld the judgement by the National Industrial Court that the lecturers should go back to the classroom with immediate effect. Reacting to the latest court judgement, ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke disclosed that the union is yet to receive a copy of the Appeal Court ruling before it will make any comment.

UNILAG Gets First Female Vice Chancellor

A Professor of Microbiology at the College of Medicine, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has emerged the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Ogunsola, was declared UNILAG’s 13th substantive VC by the selection committee on the institution on Friday night. She emerged the favourite for the top job among the seven candidates shortlisted for the institution’s top job. Other shortlisted candidates were: Professors Abayomi Akinyeye of the Department of History, Faculty of Arts; Mathew Ilori and Adeyinka Adekunle both of the Faculty of Sciences; Imran Smith of the Faculty of Law; Timothy Nubi of the Department of Estate Management at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences; and Ayo Olowe of the Faculty of Management Sciences.

Strike Action Now Obsolete – CONUA Kicks

The recently registered Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics, CONUA, says a strike is no longer an option as the union is considering other means of driving their demands home with the federal government. Being a rival to the Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian University, CONUA has bragged that though it recently secured registration, it has established its presence in 17 universities across the federation and still working on registering new members.
